If nothing else, the brewing showdown between America and China over access to rare earths has highlighted the vital nature these compounds and their related magnets play a role in a wide range of U.S. weapons systems.. Indeed, federal lawmakers in recent weeks have renewed calls to establish a strategic rare-earth stockpile similar to the nation’s petroleum reserve specifically to make sure

REEs are naturally found in very low concentration in the environment. Mines are often in countries where environmental and social standards are very low, causing human rights violations, deforestation and contamination of land and water. Near mining and industrial sites the concentrations can rise to many times the normal background levels. Once in the environment REEs can leach into the soil where their transport is determined by numerous

platforms and weapon systems that enable warfighting capabilities. A rare earth element is one of 17 chemical elements, including the 15 metallic chemical elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71, as well as the chemically similar elements scandium and yttrium. These materials are considered rare in
Wollastonite ores and garnet-pyroxene skarns in the Willsboro-Lewis district, New York, USA were formed in a complex hydrothermal system associated with the emplacement of a large anorthosite pluton. Contact-metamorphic marbles were replaced by wollastonite, garnet, and clinopyroxene during infiltration metasomatism involving large volumes of water of chiefly meteoric origin.

composed of rare earth elements (REE) used in various components of defense weapon systems. Rare earth elements consist of 17 elements on the periodic table, including 15 elements beginning with atomic number 57 (lanthanum) and extending through number 71 (lutetium), as well as two other elements having similar properties (yttrium and scandium).

Sep 01, 1998 Most studies of the behavior of rare earth elements (REE) in hydrothermal environments have dealt with active systems. Bau 1991,Klinkhammer et al 1994,Mills and Elderfield 1995,and James and Elderfield (1996) have found that mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal fluids show relative LREE and Eu enrichment when normalized to seawater or MORB, which

From 2008 to 2018, China exported nearly 408,000 metric tons of rare earths, which amounted to 42.3 percent of all rare earth exports over the period. The United States was the second-largest exporter, supplying roughly 9.3 percent of the global total. Malaysia (9.1 percent), Austria (9.0 percent), and Japan (7.1 percent) rounded out the top five.
Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) are raw materials of increasing importance for modern technologies, and finding new sources has become a pressing need. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is commonly considered an environmental pollution issue. However, REY concentrations in AMD can be several orders of

China quickly became the dominant power in both the mining and the refining of these elements. By 2016, the United States imported all of the rare earth elements we used, mostly from China. During this time uses for rare earth elements expanded, and so did demand. Total U.S. imports rose by more than 14% from 2017 to 2018.
Apr 11, 2011 Rare earth elements are essential for the production of numerous weapons in the U.S. arsenal, including Tomahawk cruise-missiles, smart bombs, Predator drones, electromagnetic railguns, laser weapons, the electric motors in Joint-Strike Fighters, radar, and submarine communications systems. Ecologix Environmental Systems offers two rare earth chloride solutions that are used for phosphate abatement: lanthanum chloride and cerium/lanthanum chloride (CLC). Both solutions are very effective at removing phosphates from water due to their high affinity for phosphorus and wider effective pH range.
Rare Earth proponents argue that a planetary system capable of sustaining complex life must be structured more or less like the Solar System, with small, rocky inner planets and massive outer gas giants. Without the protection of such "celestial vacuum cleaner" planets with strong gravitational pulls, other planets would be subject to more frequent catastrophic asteroid collisions.

We study the mutual influence of magnetic and elastic properties of a Rare Earth system as an external magnetic field is applied. It is demonstrated that a magnetic phase transition should show up in the temperature dependence of certain sound velocities. Furthermore the magnetic field should induce a hybridization between the magnetic excitons and phonons.
